The Lego Group was started by Ole Kirk Christiansen, a Danish carpenter, in the early 1900's. He created Lego bricks, originally made of cellulose acetate, modeled after wooden blocks but with textured elements that allowed them to stick, or lock, together. Early Lego bricks were limited and not as versatile as the today's Lego systems. In the early 60's, the Lego Group began manufacturing Lego bricks out of high-quality ABS plastic, which is how Lego bricks are still made. In the late 1960's the Lego Duplo system was created. The Lego Duplo system is targeted towards younger children. Lego Duplo is compatible with standard Lego though - each Lego Duplo brick is exactly twice the dimensions of a standard Lego brick. This makes the transition between the two Lego systems easy, and economical.
